I've never been into costume jewelry. I've always worn gold or silver, and over the years I've begun choosing silver/white gold/platinum over yellow gold. For one thing, my beloved James Avery jewelry in gold is ridiculously expensive, and another, I love Native American/Southwest jewelry which is usually made with silver. The crazy thing is that even though I have amassed a huge collection of silver jewelry, I usually wear the same pieces over and over. It's not because I like what I have on the most...it's usually because I am in a hurry and don't make time to dig out the rest of the pieces.
I do have a collection of costume jewelry that belonged to my grandmother (think clip-on earrings with matching bracelets and lots of brooches) and from my mother. I wouldn't part with them for all the tea in China because every time I have one of these pieces in my hand, it reminds me of them...and memories come flooding back of watching them dress for the day or an event. I also have several very old pieces that are family heirlooms...an old onxy and gold pendant which tiny seed pearls forming a cross on one side, and a tiny picture of my grandfather on the backside. It belonged to my great-grandmother, Julia. And I have a pair of gold earrings that belonged to my great-great grandmother. When I was younger we would visit my cousins on their farm in Independence, Texas, and in their living room was a portrait of that esteemed lady with those very earrings dangling from her ears. One day I will give those to the museum in Independence.
Back to costume jewelry--it just never appealed to me. But that may change. The trend these days happens to be statement pieces, and
in particular large, colorful necklaces that really make an outfit pop. Chico's has had a corner on this market for a while. If you look at their catalog, and imagine the clothing without the jewelry, it's quite different. Talbots also has some really beautiful costume jewelry. And my friend, Laura, usually sports a gorgeous statement piece around her neck.

I don't know...I may have to buy into this trend of statement pieces. Look at Pinterest fashion sites and you will see a lot of this. I may have to break my rule and buy a piece or two. I can always make something from the pieces if it goes out of style or I decide I don't like it!
What do you think about statement pieces? Do you wear costume jewelry? What is your favorite piece?
